To Prohibit or Not to Prohibit…

Is prohibition really worth it?  After watching the first episode of “Boardwalk Empire” I record a few thoughts about prohibition.  It didn’t work in the 1920s and it’s not working today.  It’s time we realize that no matter how good our intentions are, it’s wrong to make it illegal for people to do things because it’s “bad for them” or because “you know what’s best”.  It’s not just that “laws shouldn’t prohibit” such things – it is immoral to prohibit people from doing whatever they want as long as they aren’t hurting others.  Just like it would be ridiculous to pass a law saying “it’s illegal to wear the color red” we need to start looking at prohibition laws (not just drug prohibition, but all of them) as just as ridiculous and offensive to our liberties.  It’s time we start listening to Evelyn:

“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”  –  Evelyn Beatrice Hall
