How Education Should Be…

I recently watched a “TED Talk” on a teacher who teaches his children in a VERY unsual way (compared to traditional American teaching).

I think this teacher is brilliant.  He realizes he doesn’t have all the answers.  And he realizes the collective ideas of 9 year olds (yeah, fourth graders) is greater than his own.  He gives several examples where the children astound him with ideas that he never considered.

This is what I mean by alternative teaching.  It doesn’t have to be in “alternative schools” or even at home.  But the cookie cutter teaching that so many of us received is so far below the knowledge and life-long understanding that his students have learned that it’s embarassing.

And as he stated…”it’s only on the shoulders of others…”
